The Saldanha Family

From Uganda, E. Africa & Bengal, India, two Goans built a family in Nakuru, Kenya to return back to Saligao, Goa. From there, the story continues....

Edwin Saldanha Edwin was born in Entebbe, Uganda in April of 1918. He was sent down to Goa to study, living with his grandmother in Salmona, Saligao and doing his Permergrao out of Mater Dei institute. The rigours of those studies set the stage for the future he was to endure. He joined the religious order of the Jesuits as a lay brother preparing for priesthood but as he progressed, he realized that this was not his calling. He left the priesthood to return to his birthplace in Uganda but along the way was offered a position in Nakuru, by his brother, Freddie. He put his roots down there and married (sight unseen) Phyllis (D'Cruz) who sailed out from Bombay to meet the man of her dreams!! Together, they raised a family of 5 in Nakuru and except for a short sojourn back to Goa in 1964, lived out of the same house in Section 58 After returning to Goa in 1969, he was asked to return to teaching at St. Britto's by Fr. Meyrellis. In addition to his educational duties, he took on organising the scout troop and got involved with the aministration of Scouting in Goa, eventually becoming the State Commissioner. He has never let moss grow under his feet, getting involved in everything from taxidermy (up to the instructional level) to wine making, recently publishing a book on the subject.
Phyllis Saldanha Phyllis was the eldest born to parents who lived in and around Calcutta India. Grandpa Cajetan worked on the railways and made home in a small town of Adra. When just in primary school, Phyll contracted typhoid fever and was very sick. She however recovered to go on to be a role model for the rest of her family. She virtually raised her youngest brother and sister as her mother was completely immersed in caring for her ailing father for the last several years of his life. Phyllis was arranged to marry Edwin by the matchmakers in the village and sailed out of India to an unknown future. She made her home in Nakuru, Kenya and after a brief teaching career settled to be a full time home maker. Each one of her children benefitted from the care and attention they received and stand proud as a living legacy to her attentiveness. Phyllis passed away on Sept. 3/95 after a long fight with a mysterious ailment that failed to claim her spirit.
Yvette D'Souza Yvette was born in Nairobi, Kenya as Ed & Phyll did not want to take any chances with this treasure they had been endowed with. Dr. Maisey made sure that all went well and Yvette grew up strong and proud to be the first of the "litter". She was the alpha personality that typifies first-borns. Sailed through her schooling career at the top of her class (Catholic Parochial, Nakuru; Goan School, Nakuru and St. Marys, Mapuca)and went on to further studies (BA Xaviers, Mapuca) She completed a MA throught the Post Grad. Center in Panjim, securing the highest mark in the state! She went on to teach at a variety of primary & secondary schools and eventually was teaching at the Carmel College in Nuvem before getting married to Dinesh D'Souza and moving to Bombay. They have one son, Andrew (Mar 1985) and emmigrated to Canada in 1991 after a 2 year posting to Chicago. They currently live in Mississauga, Ontario where Yvette has resumed her teaching career.
Kevin Saldanha Kevin was born in the Government hospital in Nakuru and as a child was carried by a ghost (that's another story!) that has left him "touched" throughout his lucky life. Growing up in the shadow of his sister was not easy but he survived and thrived, making his own way. Schooling came easy and he was content with 2nd, 3rd & 4th place rarely making that slight additional effort to secure 1st (through the Catholic Parochial, Nakuru; Goan School, Nakuru and St. Brittos, Mapuca). After suffering through secondary schooling in the same institution where his father taught, Kevin was like a free spirit in the first year of his university education (FYBSc) in St. Xaviers, Mapuca. The resulting failure in the final exam's proved to be a turning point in his career. He went on to veterinary studies in Bombay, completing a masters (and securing a gold medal) in Poultry Nutrition through the University of Agricultural Sciences in Hebbal, Bangalore. He married his childhood sweetheart, Lisette and emmigrated to Canada in 1982. After getting his veterinary degree recognized, he worked in a small animal practice for 2 year eventually opening his own hospital in 1988. They have 2 children Alex (Dec 86) and Emerald (Mar 91) and a dog, Tish, a miniature dachshund (Dec 95)
Patricia Nazareth Patsy was born in Nakuru few years after Kevin and was independent in every way. Her childhood was disrupted by a temporary change of residence from Kenya to Goa and back to Kenya in 1964-65. As a young child, she contracted Tetanus shortly after returning to Goa. She was hospitalized for two months, half of which was spent in intensive care. Fortunately, she survived this harrowing ordeal (while several other patients at the same time did not) and went on with her studies to achieve sucess in the Arts at the University level, ultimately achieving a coveted MEd degree which assured her a top spot in the education field. She married Frederick in 1989 and they have one daughter, Cathy (Feb,91). Patsy and her family emmigrated to Canada in August of 1998, making home in Mississauga, Ontario.
Jennifer Fernandes Jenny took after her father in every way including her love and talent at creative art. Born in Nakuru just before leaving for what was to be a short stay in Goa, she grew up in the atmosphere of an established family and was expected to follow tradition. But she was always on her own and excelled in her creative talents rather than in group activities. She went on to study science eventually securing a masters in Science studying the ecosystems of the mangrove forests! She taught higher secondary in Goa (Xaviers, Mapuca) before marrying Mark Fernandes and emmigrating to Austin, Texas. They have one son and heir, Daniel (Feb 94). Jenny and family moved to San Jose, California in 1997 following Mark's able talents in the computer industry.
Daphne DeSouza Diggy, as she is fondly known is the youngest and brightest of the Saldanha clan, excelling in everything she puts her hand to. She studied Science in Xavier's, Goa ultimately achieving an MSc in chemistry. She put her hand to teaching and even did a stint teaching at the Goan Institute of Culinary Arts (the Catering College) in Porvorim. She and is currently teaching higher secondary at Arambol in North Goa. She married Deryk in December of 1997 and lives between Saligao and Margao hoping to make home in Porvorim.

Here is a little about us:

The "Saldanha" clan returned from Nakuru, Kenya in 1969 to Goa. Schooling and university studies followed in the tradition that a good educational foundation was essential to a successful career (both parents, Edwin & Phyllis were teachers, art/geography and English/music respectively)
