The sanctuary was set up out of the need in Mississauga for a non-profit
organization to fund the veterinary & rehabilitation expenses for injured
wild animals and birds.
The main goal of the organization funded by donations to the project is to
provide refuge, veterinary care and rehabilitation to the wild life
that have been displaced from their normal habitat. Due to the explosive
expansion of residential, commercial and industrial development, the
few remaining pockets of virgin growth and wetlands are becoming isolated
from each other and consequently unable to sustain the wild life population.
Fortunately for the foresight of the Credit Valley Conservation Authority
together with concerned politicians, we can boast of well protected
areas surrounding the Credit river and associated tributaries.
In selecting the site for this project, careful consideration was given to the proximity to residential developments and the ability of rehabilitated animals to find their way back into undisturbed wilderness. A centrally located greenbelt area is the selected site for the wildcare clinic and animal hospital at the corner of Carolyn Road and Creditview Road in Mississauga. This site will include veterinary surgical and medical facilities, a protected rehabilitation unit and specially designed flight cages to allow recovery of flying patients.
There is a designated release zone along the Credit river and plans are underway to aquire approximately 30 acres of wooded conservation land along the river bank for protected, undisturbed release of birds and small mammals.
