Inside this Newsletter

  • Cold Weather is here - Winter Weather Warning

    - Tips to keep your pet safe and healthy this winter.

Now that Winter is here we have to take special care to protect our pets from the risks of cold weather. We can give our pets a safer, healthier cold weather season by following a few safety tips.

    • Keep indoor pets in a dry, warm area free of drafts. Elevate your pet's bed off the floor. Outside dogs would benefit from a dry, insulated dog house raised several inches off the ground and facing away from the Northeast.
    • Remove ice, salt and caked mud from your pet's paws and coat at once. Ice-melt chemicals and rock salt can injure the pads and web of the foot and can also make a dog sick when licked. Get help immediately if you suspect yor pet has frostbite. Frostbitten skin may turn reddish, white or grey, and it may be scaly or sloughing.
    • Cats and kittens often find warmth on car engines. Knock on the hood or honk the horn; then wait a few moments before starting the car.
    • Pets like the smell and sweet taste of antifreeze, but it damages kidneys and even a small quantity can kill them! Thoroughly clean up spills at once. Tightly close containers and store them where pets can't get a hold of them. Consider using the new, less toxic brands of antifreeze now on the market.
    • Keep your pets on its regular diet. Holiday treats such as chocolate and bone can be harmful and wreak havocon your pets digestion. Illnesses range from diarrhea and vomiting, to kidney or liver damage.
    • Many plants including Christmas rose, holly, mistletoe, philodendron and dieffenbachia are toxic to pets! Keep them out of your pets reach.
