Looking into Cardiff entries (early March 2005) with John Sayers, the expert, I found, as expected, in the 1891 census, Parish of St. John, at 12 Newport Road - John Edwards, 58, born Neath, Welsh speaking [b abt 1833]; he is listed as a "Dealer in Fancy Goods" [note - he is not listed as a coach builder or repairer]. His wife Elizabeth Maria, 42, [believed born Poole] was born at "Cricklade, Gloucestershire" [about 1849]. The three stepsons are: Arthur Geo Stephens, 20 (also Dealer in Fancy Goods), Lloyd Augustus, 17 "in partnership", and William A, 15, scholar; and finally daughter Elsie Leonora Edwards, 8, scholar, all b Cardiff, Glam. Mary Anne Berritt?, 27, Domestic Servant completes the household.

Searching in "free BMD" shows that there is an entry for Cricklade, Wiltshire, Jan-Mar 1848 - Elizabeth Poole, Vol 8 page 314. There is only one entry (in that name) - for the period 1842 - 1852.

Later - 1881 census - Arthur G Stephens, 10, b Cardiff head John Edwards, 49, at 2 Woodford Place, Cardiff// St John
but only other residents are 2 servants. Ellen Jones & Eliza Burnell. This is strange - see below for the rest of the family (living/staying with the Poole family in Abergavenny, Monmouth).

However a hunt for the birth of Arthur Geo Stephens, (aged 20 in the 1891 census) in free BMD produces doubful results:
Births Dec 1871 - Stephens Arthur - Gower 11a 626  
Births Mar 1873 - Stephens Arthur - Frisby Cardiff 11a 277
but an Arthur George Stephens was born 3rdQ 1870 in E. Preston district (Sussex) ref 2b 309 (also from freeBMD)
the IGI shows - ARTHUR Stevens - father WILLIAM Stevens Mother: Elizabeth - chr 30 May 1869 Ardingley Sussex

Looking for Elizabeth Poole's marriage to Mr Stephens
Stephens William Newport Mon 11a 330 Marriages q to Dec 1869; he died after 1876 (son William A born about then) but before 1881 (Eliz M has surname Edwards in census). If E M Poole & Wm Stephens were living in Newport Mon, the Wm Stephens death might be:
from FreeBMD - Stephens William aged 54 4Q 1879 Newport, M. ref 11a 132 - have to get/check age to establish likelihood.

After much searching the only possible recorded marriage -
Marriages to Dec 1876 EDWARDS John, STEPHENS Eliza, Helston 5c339 - turns out - wrong one  

deaths are recorded from BMD:

Poole Eunice Leonora 1stQ 1882 aged 60 Newport M 11a 129 [note - aged in 1881 census is 62]
