for ENGLISH & WELSH City & Town Directories start with
http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/howto1.asp

http://www.amostcuriousmurder.com/JonesFS.htm
- The first, or

http://www.scotsfind.org/kirkcaldy_access/kirkcaldie.pdf
- an example of a Victorian book on the web - selected Kirk Session items from Kirkaldy, fife 1650- 1720

- some advice when searching. Find out the "usual entry" for the trade you are looking for eg Cow Houses instead of Dairies - search for trades first, before people. Try different names Wm and Jno as well as William and John

If you are getting nowhere, search for a similar entry that you know about - one from a publication or web page you have; this will give you "search leads" to re-try for what you really want.
