Scottish Regional Family History Societies, and a publication
list
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/Genealogy.html - list of printed genealogy books for Scotland

- find that rare out-of-print book, and buy
it - use the subject search field
- eg "Local history" and a county name

Directories start with
http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/howto1.asp
http://www.amostcuriousmurder.com/JonesFS.htm
- The first, or 1786, Jones/Lumsden
Glasgow Directory

http://www.nls.uk/catalogues/resources/sbti/intro.html
- An index created by Scottish National Library Staff - on various
aspects of the book trades
http://www.scotsfind.org/kirkcaldy_access/kirkcaldie.pdf
- an example of a Victorian book on the web - selected Kirk Session
items from Kirkaldy, fife 1650- 1720
- some advice when searching. Find out the "usual entry" for the trade you are looking for eg Cow Houses instead of Dairies - search for trades first, before people. Try different names Wm and Jno as well as William and John
If you are getting nowhere, search for a similar entry that you know about - one from a publication or web page you have; this will give you "search leads" to re-try for what you really want.
