This talk covers the design and use of smart antennas for cellular telephone and other applications. Smart antennas are described and shown as a use of key technology to provide the needed enhancements of not only range extension, but also interference suppression and increased system capacity.
Dr.
Jack H. Winters
received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from The Ohio
State University in 1981 and was then with AT&T in the research
area for more than 20 years. At AT&T, he was Division Manager of
the Wireless Systems Research Division of AT&T Labs-Research.
Currently, he is consulting for several wireless and optical
communication companies. Attendance 55; 25 IEEE members, 2
students.

Leaky Waves on Planar
Structures: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Prof. David R. Jackson, Dept of
Electrical and Computer Engineering,University of Houston, TX.
Monday, March 10th 2003, 7:00 pm
5th floor conference room, SITE building, University of Ottawa, 800
King Edward Avenue.
This presentation will discuss the
propagation and excitation of leaky modes on planar structures
structures, including both printed-circuit transmission lines and
planar antennas. The controlled excitation of leaky modes on planar
antenna structures is good, since it enables the fairly simple design
of novel leaky-wave antennas that can find application at microwave
and millimeter-wave frequencies.
