- The Ottawa VTS Chapter meets 2 - 4 times per year, usually
in the evenings at the Crowsnest, 78 Lisgar St, but on occasion
at the Communications Research Centre Auditorium, daytime. An
attempt is made to get two Distinguished Speakers from VTS
(out-of-town) per year; we have had visitors from Washington,
Dublin Ireland and Germany in the last 2 years. Presently we
publicise using the Sections web listing and monthly email
bulletin; there is a limited email announcement, but this is
planned for expansion soon;

- The EMC Chapter meets a minimum of 2 times per year, mainly
for talks from Distinguished Lecturers. Such past Distinguished
Lecturers include Henry Ott, Todd Hubing, and Mark Montrose.
All updates are provided by a monthly e-mail newsletter, and
non-IEEE members can also subscribe by sending an email to
bokhari@tality.com, with the subject "Subscribe."

- The Ottawa IM Chapter meets 2 - 4 per year, usually in the
evenings at the University of Ottawa, SITE, 150 Louis Pasteur
Street. An attempt is made to get two Distinguished Speakers
from IM per year; we have had speakers from Amsterdam
(Netherlands), Orebro (Sweden), etc.... In 2000 we organized,
in collaboration with CITO, a TechTalk Workshop on Virtual
Reality. Presently we publicize using the Sections web listing
and monthly email bulletin.

- The Ottawa Chapter is the first outside the US. This local
affinity group is open (at no charge) to all IEEE members; a
minimal cost applies to be listed in the AICN directory. We
meet about 6 times per year and provide an informal networking
opportunity. Speakers are invited based on member interest;
topics include marketing, accounting, management and legal
issues (e.g.IP and contracts). .

- The Chapter is evolving to better meet the needs of its
membership, and meets at least twice a year; it also
co-sponsors meetings with the Society of Reliabilty Engineers,
Ottawa. Topics cover all aspects of reliability across a wide
spectrum of science, engineering and business fields, e.g.
medical devices, microelectronics, and chip testing protocols.
We publicise events on the IEEE Ottawa web site.there is also
an e-mail bulletin to the members and interested guests - a few
wall posters, too. If you would like to help shape this

me.The local chapter is co-hosting a
Major

- The Ottawa Chapter of the AES Society meets 2 - 3 times per

Board Room, Carleton University, or at the University of

Society Distinguished Visitor per year. One year we were
fortunate in having 2 distinguished visitors! Presently we

- Ottawa IEEE Power Engineering Society (PES): The functions

- The chapter addresses the needs of the community in the
field of interestof the IEEE Neural Networks Society
(www.ieee-nns.org)
which is defined as "the theory, design, application, and
development of biologically and linguistically motivated
computational paradigms emphasizing neural networks, including
connectionist systems, genetic algorithms, evolutionary
programming, fuzzy systems, and hybrid intelligent systems in
which these paradigms are contained." These topics are
sometimes included in broaderframeworks, usually referred to as
Computational Intelligence or Soft Computing. -

- In our Chapter we run 'Professional' meetings, i.e., the
speaker discusses current developments in his/her discipline.
The lecture type presentation (~50 min) is followed by
discussion period (~10-20 min). Usually the talk is preceded by
10-15 min socializing.

As of March 2003 - We have over 300 active
members- the largest student branch in Canada.We hosted social
event for company representatives to meer with students; n
various formats we have up to 15 companies and 200 students
take part. Our annual Student Professional Awareness Conference
(SPAC) held at the Casino de Hull, emphasized the need for soft
skills in the work place.Over 300 students attended; four
company leaders gave presentations. Our campus office offers
various services to students; we hold an IEEE Papers'
Competition every year.
