A Scottish Heritage Tour - Pontiac County, Quebec

Shawville, Mansfield & Bryson
Saturday 23 June 2007 - 9 am - 6 pm, with optional supper afterwards -

First stop Bristol Memorial Presbyterian Church (ask for directions) - registration, snack; then the other Scots church in Bristol - St Andrew's-Knox United. Then we travel up to Shawville; museum at 11.15, Lake St.; "The Equity" bookstore closes at noon - full of interesting items. A short walking tour of Shawville with lunch, & local archives. Then up to the Chutes du Coulonges - lumbering, natural history, Heritage Walks etc. On to Bryson House Museum in Mansfield and delve into details of the business endeavours of the Scotsman George Bryson; a light tea. On to the 5-pier wooden Marchand Bridge in Fort Coulonge - it has a 2.6 m height limit - cars only. A brief visit to St Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Mansfield (Fort Coulonge) & a conducted tour of the Bryson Home Spruceholme (why not stay over? - its a B & B) across the road - by George Toller, a descendant who spent his your in the house. Travel back along 148, and take Hwy 301 to the right; stop at the old Scottish Churchyard, Litchfield. Then Portage du Fort (optional dinner at Auberge Mont Blanc - three-course dinner specials under $14, not included in tour fee). A brief stop on the barrage, then up the winding hill (Ontario 653) and at Chenaux: left onto Storyland Road (County 4). Up the hill & stop for a "Grand Panoramic View" of the Pontiac. Then a choice of routes home: #1 - slow scenic (river road to Arnprior via Braeside) or #2 - Follow #4 to Hwy 17 & home. Either way, 4-lane Hwy 417 from Arnprior.

Schedule - 9.30am Bristol; Shawville arr 11.15am museum visit; Archives noon - 12.30pm, lunch 12.30pm ;
- Arr Chute des Coulonges - 2. pm, leave 3. pm
Bryson House Museum 3.15 pm; Marchand Bridge 4.15 pm; St Andrew's Church, Mansfield (Ft C) abt 5 pm;
Scots Church graveyard 6.15pm; Portage du Fort 8 pm ( after supper); supper 7pm leave 7.45 pm.
Panorama 8.15; journey home starts 8.30 pm - less than an hour

Fees: $45 for society members, about $55 for non-members (all are welcome). Wear suitable clothing. Some locations have stairs; washrooms in all buildings except Shawville Museum. Registration is by using a mailed form, or the Registration form on-line, and sending in a cheque, which must arrive by 15 June, or a surcharge of $10 applies. Fee includes morning snack, lunch, light tea, admissions to all museums etc. Brochure can be mailed on request - no PDFs.
