Biography:

Carruthers is a Scottish place name, for the so-named location near Ecclefechan in Dumfries. It was first noted in 1334 with the spelling Carrothres, and again in 1350 as Caer Ruther(from Briton ker = fort + a personal name meaning "red + king, ruler"). Variations are Carothers, Carrothers, Crothers, Carradice, Carrodus, Cardis, Cardus, Crowdace, Cruddace, Cruddas , and Credeur.

The Carruthers Clan is a Sept to the Bruce Clan of Scotland, our tartan is the same as the Bruce. We were also included in the "Border Reivers" a band of thieves, etc., that raided the border between Scotland and England. No doubt the Carruthers Clan was at the Battle of Bannockburn when King Robert Bruce defeated the English.

Our particular branch of the family appears to have started up roots in Scotland, migrated to Canada and settled in the Dundee Quebec, Winchester Ontario, Morewood ontario locations in the mid 1800's. Information I have been working on includes the following family names: Shearer, Watt, Steven, Coulthart, Carruthers, Wyatt, Brimacombe, Crowe
